Sometimes even the best laid plans and intentions can go awry. Such was the case recently when, as part of a Morph Labs experiment, we teamed up with the fine folks at Improv everywhere. The video above shows the details but basically the plan was to get 40 people dressed up in White Morphsuits wearing typical GAP clothing and then to enter the flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York and pretend to be mannequins all over the store. Things actually went really well at first. We got some great reactions. Some people saw us get into place and were laughing and taking pictures. Others stood there shopping without realizing they were surrounded by actual humans. There was even one guy who walked up and started feeling the clothing on one of the human mannequins.
Even the store clerks thought it was great… except for the one that called the police.
After we were all just preparing to leave suddenly the place started swarming with NYPD officers. They proceeded to run around telling everyone in a morphsuit to get down and all 40 were handcuffed until they ran out of handcuffs and started using zip ties. After about 20 minutes cooler heads prevailed and were able to explain why we were there and it turns out a few of the cops have even participated in a few of the ImprovEverywhere stunts. Thankfully, in the end, no one was hurt… and we got some cooler footage out of it.
