Adult Pirate Costume: History vs. Hollywood, Plus 6 Real Picks

A real Golden Age pirate would not have worn a tricorn hat, an eye patch, gold earrings, or a bandana: historians find little evidence any of those were common among actual sailors. Pirates still tied for third among adult Halloween costumes at 1.6 million wearers, in the National Retail Federation's 2025 survey. What pirates actually wore (and what Hollywood added)

Most of what we picture as "pirate style" traces to works of fiction, Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island among them, rather than the historical record, according to the World History Encyclopedia's account of pirate clothing in the Golden Age of Piracy. Real crew wore practical linen and wool in blues, tans, dark greens, whites and grays, not the black-and-red palette costumes default to: collarless pullover shirts, baggy trousers rolled up for climbing rigging, round-toed leather shoes with wool stockings in cold weather, and a neck scarf against wind and sweat.

Tricorn hats were not known to be worn even by pirate captains, and eye patches, gold earrings and bandanas were all uncommon among ordinary sailors, real evidence for any of the three is thin. Captains dressed apart from their crews, in long coats taken from wealthy captives or bought ashore: one real captain, Bartholomew Roberts, who died in 1722, was known for a scarlet silk coat with a matching damask waistcoat.

None of that makes a tricorn-and-eyepatch costume wrong. Its job is to read as "pirate" in about two seconds, which that silhouette does better than a historically faithful linen shirt ever would. We would rather call it costume shorthand than let "authentic" do work it cannot back up.

Our own product photo styles the shirt with a tricorn hat, a dreadlock wig, a red bandana and black pants, none of which are included at this price; they are separate listings, added for the shot. Add your own dark pants and a bandana from around the house and the shirt does the rest.

It comes in five sizes, Small through XX-Large (US 4-6 through 20-22), on a unisex cut, and the page's own advice is to take the larger of two if you are on the line: this shirt is supposed to hang loose.

The sword in our product photo is a prop; it does not ship. This is the pick that includes the eye patch, the one accessory the history above says real sailors barely wore but every costume-aisle pirate needs anyway.

Sized by chest: Medium 38-40in, Large 42-44in, XL 46-48in. Measure over a t-shirt rather than working back from your usual shirt size, because the tunic is cut to layer.

4. Sexy Pirate Captain Costume Womens

Our Sexy Pirate Captain Costume Womens is $44.95 for two pieces: a black and cream dress with a fitted bodice, puffed sleeves and a layered skirt, plus a coordinating hat. That is a shorter pack list than the $32.95 set above, at $12 more, fairer to say plainly than let the price imply piece count. The sword, the knee-high boots, and the jewelry in our product photo are all styling; only the dress and the hat ship.

Six sizes, Small (US 4-6) through XXX-Large (US 24-26), the widest run of any pick here, with a structured bodice that sits close to the torso and a skirt cut to fall loose over the hips.

5. Pirate Mermaid Pick Me Up Inflatable Costume

Our Pirate Mermaid Pick Me Up Inflatable Costume is $45.95, and it is the one pick here that breaks from "historical accuracy" on purpose: a pirate-carrying-a-mermaid piggyback illusion, built from a high-powered fan and elastic seals that hold the shape for around four hours on four AA batteries, not included. It ships one size fits most adults, so there is no chart to check, just the fan run time to plan a long night around.

Care is different from the other five because of the fan: hand wash only, battery pack and fan unit out first, then a full air dry, deflated, before it is folded away.

Seven pieces ship: a brown jacket with an attached shirt and vest, pants, a belt with pouch detail, boot covers, a scarf, a scabbard, and a tricorn hat with an attached dreadlock wig. The boot covers are exactly that, a layer over your own shoes, not a replacement: our photo still shows the model's own shoes below the cuffs, which is expected, not a flaw.

Sized by chest, Medium (38 to 40 inches) through XL (46 to 48 inches). Because the shirt and vest are sewn into the jacket, the chest is the measurement that decides the fit. All seven pieces land in a single box, with nothing to assemble.

Sizing and care: what actually ships

Two sizing systems run across these six. Women's styles go by US dress size, 4-6 through 24-26 on the captain dress; the two men's sets go by chest, 38 to 48 inches.
