A sumo wrestler costume comes in two builds: a full inflatable suit that turns you into the wrestler, and a Pick Me Up illusion where an inflatable wrestler looks like he is carrying you off. Our favorites are one of each. The Sumo Megamorph is a one-piece inflatable suit with muscles, tassels, a headpiece, and a fan with a battery pack, in red, blue, or black; the Sumo Pick Me Up stays inflated for up to 4 hours on good-quality batteries. Both come in adult and kids versions.

This guide sits under our best inflatable costumes roundup. If you are shopping for a younger wrestler, see best kids inflatable costumes; if the carried-off gag is the part you love, our piggyback costumes guide has more of them.

What kinds of sumo wrestler costumes are there?

Sumo wrestler costumes come as a full-body inflatable suit or as a Pick Me Up, and each one gets its laugh a different way. The full suit gives you the wrestler's whole build, head to toe. The Pick Me Up puts an inflatable wrestler behind you, so you look like the one who lost the bout and got lifted off the floor.

Both builds borrow from the real thing. A sumo wrestler's belt is the mawashi, and for wrestlers in the top two divisions, stiffened silk fronds called sagari are tucked into its front during tournaments; the tassels on our Megamorph nod to them. In tournaments, wrestlers in the top two divisions wear their hair in the ōichō, a topknot splayed out like a ginkgo leaf, and the Megamorph pack includes a headpiece to complete the look.

How does the Sumo Pick Me Up work?

You get carried off

The Sumo Pick Me Up Inflatable Costume is one inflatable suit that makes it look like a sumo wrestler is carrying you. It is one size that fits most adults (the size chart is in the product images), goes on with an easy pull-on fastening, and runs on 4 x AA batteries (not included). Elastic openings help it stay inflated for up to 4 hours with good-quality batteries, and the stitching is reinforced at the stress points.

The Pick Me Up suits anyone who wants the gag without becoming the wrestler. The Pick Me Up shows off what you wear with it, so pick a bold top to stand out against the wrestler.

Which sumo costume works for a bachelor party or a group?

Two Megamorphs in different colors make a sumo bout, so a pair is a natural pick for bachelor parties and group nights. In a small sample of adult and kids sumo orders on our US site since June, close to half were a pair, and each of those pairs was one red and one blue. Red corner, blue corner, and black for a referee or the groom.

  • A pair: one red and one blue Megamorph for a two-person bout.
  • A bigger group: mix all three colors, and add a Pick Me Up for the one who always gets carried home.
  • The group discount: we offer 10% off any order of more than five costumes, arranged by contacting us before you order (see our FAQs).

For more group ideas beyond sumo, our bachelor and bachelorette party costumes guide covers the full night out. The whole adult range lives in adult inflatable costumes.

Are there sumo costumes for kids?

All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs. The red kids Megamorph's product page notes it is not suitable for children under 3 because of small parts, so check each product page before you buy for a younger child. The full kids range is in kids inflatable costumes.

How do inflatable sumo costumes work?

An inflatable sumo costume inflates because a small battery-powered fan sucks air into the suit (Wikipedia, Inflatable costume). Every sumo costume in our range runs on 4 x AA batteries, which are not included, so buy them with the costume.

  • Getting in: dress in close-fitting clothes underneath for comfort, fit the batteries, step in, and switch the fan on. On the black adult Megamorph, the product page notes the fan with battery pack controls the level of inflation, so you can adjust how full the suit sits. For the kids Pick me Up, the product page says to pull the hood over the head first, then put the legs in.
  • How long it lasts: the adult Pick Me Up stays inflated for up to 4 hours with good-quality batteries, and the kids Pick me Up gives over 4 hours. The Megamorph pages do not list a run time, so pack a spare set of AAs for a long night.
  • Sizing: each suit is one size, designed to fit most adults or most children. Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks. Read the size guide on the product page before you order.
  • Care: hand wash only, never the washing machine. Take out the fan and battery pack first, let the suit air dry fully before you inflate or store it, then deflate it and store it flat or loosely folded.

Sumo costumes land in a busy season. The National Retail Federation expects 71% of Halloween shoppers to spend $4.4 billion on costumes in 2026, with $2 billion of that on adult costumes and $1.5 billion on kids' costumes (NRF, 2026 Halloween survey).

Is an inflatable sumo costume the same as a sumo wrestling suit?

No, an inflatable sumo costume is a costume, and a padded sumo wrestling suit is party game equipment. Search for "sumo suit" and you will see both. Game suits are rented in pairs, usually foam-padded, and event rental companies supply them as a kit with headgear, gloves, and a wrestling mat for a party wrestling game (example rental listing).

Our sumo costumes are air-filled costumes for Halloween, bachelor parties, and themed nights: made to wear, dance in, and pose for photos. If a wrestling game is the plan, rent game suits from a party rental company; if you want to look like a sumo wrestler at the party, this is the costume.
