A horse costume is a great way to choose your joke: you can be the horse, ride the horse, or be the jockey with no horse at all. We have a pick for each. The Horse Giant Inflatable Costume holds its shape on a built-in fan that runs for over 4 hours on 4 x AA batteries (yours to supply), and each men's jockey costume comes with a top, white pants, a hat, goggles, and boot covers.

Horse looks are one corner of our best inflatable costumes roundup. The horse ride-on has its own write-up in our best piggyback costumes for adults guide; younger riders have best kids inflatable costumes; and other creatures are in best animal costumes for adults.

Which kind of horse costume do you want to be?

Horse looks are a great way to pick your joke: be the horse, ride the horse, or dress as the jockey and leave the horse at home. A search for "horse costume" returns costumes you wear and pages about dressing a real horse; this guide is about wearing one, so the table lines up our horse and jockey looks with what comes in each pack.

What is the giant inflatable horse costume like to wear?

Adult wearing the giant inflatable horse costume, a brown inflatable horse body with a grinning toothy head, black mane and tail, and black hoof boots, with the wearer's face showing at the neck

You are the horse

The Horse Giant Inflatable Costume is a blow-up horse that holds its shape on a built-in fan. Fit 4 x AA batteries (not included) and the fan runs for over 4 hours. Elastic seals keep the air in, and a built-in pocket means you can reach your phone without climbing out of the horse. It comes in one size designed to fit most adults; check the product images for the size chart.

Our inflatables keep your head free rather than sealing you behind a window. Prefer a horse with no batteries? There is a jumpsuit version too.

The horse with no fan

The Mens Horse Costume is a horse jumpsuit with a padded hood, made for men and sold by body measurements. The product page calls it easy to put on and take off, and suggests thin, close-fitting layers underneath for a longer event. Check the size guide on the product page for the full chest and height measurements before you order.

Can you be the rider instead of the horse?

Yes: our horse ride-on inflatable is the rider's version of the joke, so you are on the horse instead of being it. It is one size and fits most adults by height. Our best piggyback costumes for adults guide explains how ride-ons work, with the horse alongside the other ride-on animals.

How is a jockey costume different from a horse costume?

A jockey costume makes you the rider in race-day colors, with no horse involved. Between 22 April and 11 October 2026, about one in three horse-and-jockey orders on our US site included a jockey look (our own order data, a small sample). A jockey set works for a race-day party as well as a Halloween costume night.

The Men's Blue and Yellow Jockey Costume is a button-up long-sleeve top in blue and yellow with white pants, a jockey hat, black goggles, and boot covers, in Medium, Large, and XL. The 100% polyester lets you move freely once the dancing starts.

What horse costumes are there for kids?

Kids have two great ways to be the horse: a fleece jumpsuit or an inflatable.

The kids horse jumpsuit

The Kids Horse Jumpsuit Costume is an all-in-one fleece jumpsuit. The hood has soft ears, big eyes, and a snuggly nose built in, and the floppy tail is attached, so there are no extra pieces to lose. It comes in four sizes by age: S (4-6), M (7-9), L (10-12), and XL (12-14). The product page suggests sizing up if your child is between sizes or on the taller side.

For an inflatable horse, see the Prancing Horse Inflatable Kids costume. More kids inflatables are in our best kids inflatable costumes guide and the kids inflatable costumes category. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs.

What should you know before you inflate a horse?

Fit the batteries before you leave the house, and keep a spare set, because the fan is what keeps the horse standing. The rest of the adult range is in adult inflatable costumes. Getting in, batteries, and care come from the product page; the other points are our practical advice.

  • Getting in: the product page's wearing tip is to fasten all the elastic seals securely before you switch the fan on.
  • Batteries: 4 x AA, not in the box. The product page states over 4 hours of battery life, so a party that runs longer needs that spare set.
  • Being seen: add reflective tape if you will be outside after dark. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Halloween guidance recommends costumes that are bright and clearly visible to motorists, plus reflective tape that glows in headlights (CPSC, Halloween safety, 2011).
  • Width: an inflated horse is wider than you are, so take doorways side-on and leave yourself room in a crowd.
  • Sitting: perch rather than sit deep, and keep the fan clear of the seat.
  • Bathroom breaks: switch the fan off and step out; plan it before you need it.
  • Care: hand wash only; no machine wash, no tumble drying. Remove the fan unit and battery pack before washing or storing, and let it air dry completely before you deflate it. Store it flat or loosely folded, clear of anything sharp that could puncture it.

An adult in a horse costume has plenty of company: the National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend $2 billion on adult Halloween costumes in 2026 (NRF, 2026 Halloween survey). 2026 is also the Chinese zodiac's Year of the Horse, which runs from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027 (DC Public Library), so a horse costume matches the year as well as the season.
