Women's Race Car Driver Costumes: Playsuit or Bodysuit

Playsuit or bodysuit: which women's racer costume fits your night?

The playsuit suits a warm room and a dance floor; the bodysuit suits a cold walk between bars or anyone who wants full leg coverage. Both use the same stretch fabric, zip at the front and come with a black and white flag, so you are choosing on length, where the red and the checks sit, and fit.

The Women's Racer Playsuit Costume is a black racer print with a checkered pattern and printed badges, plus a black and white race flag. Set the adjustable front zip wherever you want the neckline. The racer bodysuit: full length, close fit

The Women's Racer Bodysuit Costume runs to the ankle with a zipper front and comes with a checkered racing flag. The stretch fabric gives a snug, second-skin fit. What do you wear with a race car driver costume?

With the suit in the pack, and a flag in the women's and kids sets, a race car driver costume needs boots, sunglasses and maybe gloves. None of our 3 racer sets includes footwear or gloves, so finish the look from your own closet:

• Boots: black ankle or lace-up boots with the women's suits, sneakers with the kids suit.
• Sunglasses: aviators or dark wraparounds, pushed up into your hair for photos.
• Gloves: fingerless or driving gloves for the pit-wall look.

What does the checkered flag mean, and why is it in the pack?

The black and white checkered flag signals the end of a practice session or a race, under the international motorsport flag rules published by the sport's world governing body. That is why it reads as "race car driver" across a room. Both women's packs include a black and white flag, and the kids set includes checkered flags.

The flag also answers "what do I do with my hands" in photos: one of you waves it, the other throws a fist in the air.

How do you match race car driver costumes as a couple?

Match on color and pattern: both women's suits share the same black, red and checkered palette, so any pair reads as one team. Three pairings work:

• Driver and pit crew: one of you in a racer suit, the other in a plain black tee, cargo pants and the checkered mini top hat headband.

Is there a race car driver costume for kids?

Yes: the Boys Red Racecar Driver Costume, for ages 3 to 12, comes with its own racing mask. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says a mask's eye and nose holes should allow full visibility and adequate breathing (CPSC). Our own tip: have your racer lift the mask off before crossing a street.

The Boys Red Racecar Driver Costume is a red 100% polyester jumpsuit with an elastic back waist, plus a racing mask, a gold medal, checkered flags and an inflatable trophy for the podium photo. How do the racer suits fit, and how do you wash them?

Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks. The women's suits sit close because they are 87% polyester and 13% elastane; on the bodysuit, size up if you are between sizes. The kids jumpsuit has an elastic back waist. Check each product page's size guide before you order.

All three suits take a cold hand wash and an air dry, away from direct heat. Go gently on the playsuit to protect its print, and deflate the kids trophy fully before you wash or store the set. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs.
