What did 1940s women's professional baseball players wear?
The 1940s women's professional baseball players wore a one-piece, short-skirted, flared tunic, satin shorts, knee-high socks, and a baseball cap, in a different color for each city, according to the league players' association's history page. That professional women's league ran from 1943 to 1954, and more than 600 women competed across its 12 seasons, according to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Each city's team wore its own color, and our pink and red is our own take on the look, not a copy of any one team's uniform. Skirt length had a rule too: the league's rules of conduct, as published by Mental Floss, set uniform skirts at no shorter than six inches above the knee-cap. The players' uniform included satin shorts, and a pair of shorts under our pink dress is a sensible addition too.
Which pieces do you add yourself?
You add three pieces: sneakers, a glove, and a hair ribbon. They are the part of the look each teammate can make their own.
- Sneakers. White lace-up sneakers match the girls' and coach's photos.
- Glove. Foam or leather, a baseball glove suits the look, and it gives a young slugger something to hold in the team photo.
- Hair. A ribbon, or hair pinned up, suits the period: the same rules of conduct said "Boyish bobs are not permissible" and preferred longer hair.
How do you size and care for the whole team?
Each costume has its own size guide on its product page, and the girls' dress is sized by age, so measure every player before you order. All three are hand wash only. Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs.
