Charging is about the color of the light, not the clock
Glow print works by persistent luminescence: a europium-doped strontium aluminate pigment, the one behind the familiar green glow, absorbs light energy and releases it slowly. Research on screen-printed photoluminescent cotton in Polymers found the decay is exponential rather than steady, so most of the brightness goes early. The pigment responds most strongly to ultraviolet, around 365 nanometers, which is why direct sunlight and blacklights charge it quickly while a warm household bulb charges it slowly and only part-way. That is why people leave a costume under a lamp, see too little, and assume it is faulty.
As for how long it lasts, safety-marking standards are the only place anyone publishes real numbers. Under ISO 17398, the commonly accepted minimum class for a photoluminescent safety marking starts at 140 millicandela per square meter at 10 minutes and is down to 20 by 60 minutes, a fall of around 86 percent across that window. Treat glow as a moment, not a mode.
Glow, blacklight and light-up are different
- Glow in the dark is phosphorescent. Charge it with strong light; it works with the lights off.
- Neon or blacklight-reactive is fluorescent. It only glows while a blacklight is switched on nearby.
- Light-up uses bulbs or LEDs on batteries. Brightest of the three, and it works anywhere.
So a glow costume is the wrong buy for a blacklight party, where it just looks printed, and a neon costume is the wrong buy for trick-or-treating, because a dark street has no UV to activate it. One trap in our own naming: our Electric skeleton costumes are named for the printed electric-blue pattern, and they take no batteries.
Which cut: bodysuit, onesie, jumpsuit or Morphsuit
Search this and you will find definitions borrowed from baby clothing, including the claim that bodysuits have no legs. Wrong for costumes.
- Bodysuit. Close-fitting stretch, full length, so the bones land on your actual anatomy. Least warm, so plan a base layer outdoors.
- Onesie. A looser hooded all-in-one. Warmer and more forgiving, and the print sits on the garment rather than on you.
- Jumpsuit. Between the two, often with a separate hood and gloves, and the easiest to get out of.
- Morphsuit. Full second-skin coverage, face included. Strongest effect, most committed, since eating and drinking mean dealing with the hood first.

Will a glow costume help a driver see your child? Not really
Glow print is not a safety feature, and the category misleads people here. It emits its own faint light, measured in thousandths of a candela, while the materials that genuinely make a child visible to a driver are retroreflective: they bounce headlight beams straight back at the car, orders of magnitude brighter. We found no research measuring driver detection of a glowing garment, and the published conspicuity evidence is all retroreflective, fluorescent or battery-powered.
The risk is real: a study in JAMA Pediatrics counted pedestrian fatalities on Halloween evening running 43 percent higher than on comparable evenings, and tenfold higher for children aged four to eight. The American Academy of Pediatrics gives the sensible version: costumes that are bright and reflective, glow-in-the-dark elements plus reflective tape, and a flashlight after dark.
Fit, sizing and the plus-size problem
Skeleton costumes fail on fit more than on print quality, for a reason specific to the design: the bones are meant to line up with your body. Scale a bone print up without redrawing it and the ribs land on your stomach. So "does it come in my size" and "will it look right in my size" are different questions.
- Our cuts are not sized the same way. Adult Morphsuits go by height and weight, because they stretch to your frame. Adult jumpsuits, onesies and bodysuits go by chest and waist, or bust, waist and hip. Kids sizes go by age and height. Reading the wrong chart is the commonest ordering mistake we see.
- Measure, do not assume. Match a chest or bust measurement to the product page rather than your usual store size. Our size guide carries the charts.
- Stretch fabric goes sheer before it tears. Pushed far past its relaxed state, thin stretch opens up, black included. If a bodysuit is borderline, size up.

The bones check before you buy
Four things to check on any skeleton costume, ours or anyone's. An orthopedic surgeon reviewing skeleton costumes publicly took most of them apart on exactly these grounds.
- Printed on the back as well as the front? For half of any evening you are facing away, and a front-only print becomes a plain black suit.
- Do the bones sit where your bones sit? Check the shoulder and hip joints in the photo against where those joints are on a body.
- How many ribs? Humans have twelve pairs; plenty of costumes paint six.
- What is in the pack? Hood, mask and gloves are sometimes included and sometimes not. Read the pack contents, not the styling.
