Greaser, rockabilly, and teddy boy point at the same decade but not quite the same look, and which one you mean changes what you should buy. Greaser is the American original: a leather or leather-look motorcycle jacket, jeans, a plain white tee, and pomade-slicked hair, out of working-class youth culture rather than any single film. Rockabilly grew up around the music scene that followed and leans more styled: rolled cuffs, bandanas, fuller skirts, pin-up makeup. Teddy boy is the British cousin, tailored instead of biker: a sharp collared drape jacket and a skinny tie stand in for the motorcycle jacket.

The men's look: rebel jacket and skinny tie

How to finish the look yourself

A few real styling moves finish a 50s greaser or rockabilly look without buying anything extra; most guides skip the how, not just the what.

• Hair, men. Comb pomade or gel through damp hair and push it up and back into a slight point at the front. Skip the effort with our wig above.
