A renaissance faire costume is one character (a noble, a royal, a forest rogue, an archer, an enchantress, a knight, or a village worker) worn as layers you can walk in all day, with comfortable shoes, a hat for the sun, and a cloak for the evening. Plan for a long day on your feet: the Maryland Renaissance Festival ran its 2026 days from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on paths of mulch, stone, straw, and soil.

Faires welcome costumes: the Texas Renaissance Festival permits costumes from all eras and fantasy realms, and it counted 492,910 patron visits over eight themed weekends in 2025, according to CultureMap Houston. Below are nine of our renaissance and medieval costumes, what each pack holds, and the extras that make it faire garb. Adult knights get their own page in our knight costume ideas, and the crown gets our king costume guide.

What do you wear to a renaissance faire?

You wear a costume you can live in for a full outdoor day, built from these seven pieces:

  • One character. Choose one from the table below and let every piece serve that look.
  • A base you can walk and sit in. A tunic and pants, or a gown with room to move. Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks. Measure first, then use each product page's size guide.
  • Shoes for rough ground. Shoes are required at the Texas Renaissance Festival, and the Maryland festival warns its paths have hills and inclines. Wear plain boots you have already broken in.
  • A hat. The Arizona Renaissance Festival's marketing and sales director recommended sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes, The Copper Courier reported in 2025. Six of our nine picks pack a hat, a tiara, or a crown, and the young knight packs a helmet.
  • A layer for the evening. A cloak or cape goes over any character once the sun drops.
  • A belt. Five of our nine picks pack one, and it is where a pouch or a prop hangs.
  • Props that follow the rules. Texas and Bristol both want a real blade worn with a costume sheathed and peace-tied, and Maryland bars prop weapons that look real; the rogue section has the detail.

How do you make a costume read as faire garb?

A costume reads as faire garb once it carries the period signals: rich color and velvet for rank, plain layers for village life, and the extras worn on top. Faires are relaxed about accuracy; an April 2026 essay from The Conversation notes that strict rules about adhering to a specific time period or setting rarely apply. Rich fabrics were once limited by rank, by law. An English royal proclamation of 1574 kept purple silk, cloth of gold tissue, and sable fur for the royal family and the highest nobles (Lapham's Quarterly; full text), and barred velvet, satin, and gold or silver in women's petticoats except for the wives of barons and other ranks and court ladies the law names (Library of Congress).

How do you dress as a noble or a royal?

A noble or royal look rests on velvet-look fabric, jewel colors, gold trim, and something on the head. All three packs below include the headwear. The rest of the range sits in our historical costumes.

Man in a red velvet-look tunic with gold trim and a gold lion crest, a gold tasseled rope belt, deep red pants, and a red hat with a yellow feather, shown beside the tunic, hat, belt, and pants laid out

The noble in red and gold

The Men's Red Lion Crest Renaissance Costume packs a red velvet-look tunic with gold trim and a lion crest on the chest, matching pants, a rope belt, and a feathered hat, in sizes M to XXL. Boots are yours to bring. For the evening, add our red velour king's cloak, which fastens at the neck with a clip.

The lady of the court in blue

The Women's Blue Renaissance Gown Costume is a floor-length blue velvet-style gown with gold embroidery across the bodice, long sleeves finished in gold trim, and an elastic waist, with a matching gold tiara crown, in sizes S to XXL. Try the hem with your faire shoes on. Our black velour hooded cape, one size for most adults, goes on over your own clothes for the evening.

The queen with the faux fur trim

The Women's Royal Queen Dress Costume is a full-length red dress with a patterned center panel, gold trim, flowing bell sleeves, and soft faux fur accents at the neckline and cuffs, plus a crown, in sizes S to XXL. For the hand prop, add our royal sceptre, a lightweight molded-plastic piece whose shaft adjusts to your height.

What does a forest rogue or a woodland outlaw wear?

A rogue or outlaw wears earthy layers, a belt to hang things from, boots, and a hat or hood, the woodland look of the Robin Hood ballads. Props need care at the gate. The Texas Renaissance Festival requires any sword, rapier, or edged or pointed item worn as part of a costume to be sheathed and peace-tied, with leather straps or zip ties. Bristol Renaissance Faire makes sheathing and peace-tying its primary rule, and says foam, LARP, and plastic weapons need no sheath where none exists for their size. Read your own faire's page before you pack a prop.

The forest rogue

The Men's Charming Forest Rogue Costume packs a tunic with a button front, pants with an elastic waist, a belt, and boot covers, in sizes M to XXL. Our plastic fencing foil sword is about 25 inches long; ask your faire whether it allows it and whether it wants it peace-tied.

The woodland outlaw in green

The Women's Forest Hero Costume packs a green dress with a jagged hem and leaf-style layers, a hat with a feather, a corset-style belt, a buckle belt, and a toy dagger, in sizes S to XL. The costume is hand wash only, then air dry. For long hair under the hat, add our long brown wig.

Can you wear a fantasy costume to a renaissance faire?

Yes, fantasy costumes are welcome at many faires: the Texas Renaissance Festival permits costumes from all eras and fantasy realms, as long as the look suits guests of all ages. Elves, fairies, and pirates share the lanes with Tudor nobles, as The Conversation describes. The Maryland Renaissance Festival asks that a face covering come off as you enter the village gate, after which it can be worn as intended, though masks meant to frighten and fursuits are not allowed. Our fairy tale costumes have more storybook looks.

The enchantress in red velvet-look

The Women's Enchantress Mother Medieval Costume packs a floor-length red dress in velvet-look fabric with flared sleeves and decorative trim, an ornate belt, and a long black curly wig, in sizes S to XXL. Boots, jewelry, and crowns are not in the pack. Our gold medieval queen crown has faux gemstones and an adjustable elastic strap.

What should kids wear to a renaissance faire?

Kids do best in a costume they can walk in all day, over their own comfortable shoes, with a sweatshirt and water packed for later. Check the free-entry age: in 2026, children 6 and under were free at the Maryland Renaissance Festival (they still needed a ticket), and children 4 and under are always free at Bristol Renaissance Faire. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs. More looks sit in our kids historical costumes.

The young royal in blue

The Girls Blue Renaissance Costume is a royal blue velvet-style dress with gold trim and a matching gold crown, in sizes from 3-4 to 10-12 years. The fabric has no stretch, so measure her before you pick a size. A hook and loop fastening closes the center back.
