For a Polynesian demigod costume you wear three things: a padded bodysuit with a tattoo-style print, a leaf skirt or belt, and long, dark, curly hair. Our Mens Polynesian Hero Bodysuit Costume packs the first two for adults, with padding in the biceps, chest, and abs. Our Boys Polynesian Demi-God Costume packs the same two for ages 3-4 to 10-12 years.

The look comes in adult and kids' sizes, and shoppers expect to spend on both: the National Retail Federation's survey puts planned spending this year at $2 billion on adult Halloween costumes and $1.5 billion on children's (NRF, 2026 Halloween survey). Below, the look goes trick-or-treating, to a party, out as a parent-and-child pair, and to a luau. What makes a Polynesian demigod costume?

Muscle padding and a tattoo-style print make a Polynesian demigod costume, with leaves at the waist and long dark curly hair to finish it. A demigod is "a mythological being who is partly divine and partly human" (Dictionary.com), and the padding is what gives the costume that larger-than-life build.

The three pieces of the look: a padded tattoo-print bodysuit, a leaf skirt, and long dark curly hair.

A leaf skirt is easy to make at home. The built-in padding and the printed pattern are what the bodysuit adds, and each of our two packs includes a leaf piece anyway. Side by side:

Neither pack includes hair. For adults, the third piece is our Polynesian Princess Wig Womens, a long curly black wig in 100% polyester. It is one size, fits most adults, and has a flexible elastic band and a breathable inner cap.

Which costume works for trick-or-treating?

The Boys Polynesian Demi-God Costume suits trick-or-treating because there is nothing to paint or tie: the tattoos are printed on the jumpsuit, the 3D padding is built in, and the leaf belt fastens with velcro. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs.

Sizes run by age: 3-4, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 years. The jumpsuit is 95% polyester and 5% elastane, so it is stretchy and close across the torso and arms. The belt's velcro fastening adjusts at the waist, so there is no knot to tie.

Plan something bright or reflective for after dark: the American Academy of Pediatrics advises costumes that are bright and reflective, with glow-in-the-dark elements or reflective tape on costumes and trick-or-treat bags (AAP, Halloween safety tips), and the Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests reflective tape as trim on costumes and outerwear (CPSC, October 2022). How do adults wear the look to a party?

Adults dress in order: the bodysuit first, then the leaf skirt at the waist, then the wig. The tattoo-style print is built into the bodysuit, so there is no body paint to apply.

The adult bodysuit and leaf skirt

The Mens Polynesian Hero Bodysuit Costume has padding in the biceps, chest, and abs, and the skirt ties at the back so you can adjust it at the waist. The bodysuit is 91% polyester and 9% elastane, so it stretches to your shape. It is sized by chest and height up to XXL, so check the size guide before you order.

The wig goes on last, and with it the long dark curly hair the bodysuit cannot supply. For other looks from our range, browse our international costumes.

Can a parent and child wear it together?

Yes. The adult bodysuit and the kids' jumpsuit both have built-in padding, a printed tattoo pattern, and a leaf piece at the waist, so a parent and child read as a set. The difference is at the waist:

  • Adult: the leaf skirt ties at the back.
  • Child: the leaf belt fastens with velcro, with the green leaves already attached.

What can you add for a luau or tropical party?

For a luau or tropical party, add a fruit headband. Ours sit beside the demigod look rather than inside it, and both are one size and spot clean only.

The pineapple headband

The Tropical Pineapple Fruit Headband has a pineapple centerpiece about 6.5 inches tall, surrounded by artificial kiwi, strawberries, and oranges. The band is about 9 inches wide and fits most adult heads, ages 14 and older.

The plush fruit headband

The Tropical Fruit Headband is a plush banana, oranges, berries, and faux flowers on a lightweight band that tucks behind the ears. For a full luau outfit, our Hawaiian costume guide covers the rest.

How do you wear a Polynesian look respectfully?

You wear a Polynesian look respectfully by knowing what the markings mean and deciding whether a printed tattoo pattern is something you want to wear. Traditional Polynesian tattooing carries meaning for specific peoples: in Samoa, receiving the pe'a was a prerequisite for a man to receive a matai, or chief's, title (PBS, Skin Stories), and the designs of tā moko are, in the words of the Pitt Rivers Museum, "an imprint of Māori culture and philosophy" (Pitt Rivers Museum, Tā moko).

National Geographic's costume guide takes that seriously: it notes that costumes in this style often come with tattoos, even though many Pacific cultures consider it disrespectful to wear markings from people or places you are not spiritually or physically connected to (National Geographic). Both of our packs carry a printed tattoo-style pattern, so that guidance applies to them. If it is not something you want to wear, or to put on a child, our Halloween costumes range has plenty of other looks. A Hawaiian cultural educator quoted in the same guide suggests another route: children can express their love of a hero by thinking about the qualities they admire most in him.

Before you choose, ask someone who knows. When a child's interest comes from respect for a culture, a Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian educator quoted in the guide recommends reaching out to people with a deep knowledge of it to discuss options that will not offend.

If you do wear it, two habits keep it from going further:

  • Add nothing to your skin. No face paint, no body paint, and no skin-darkening makeup.
  • Leave out regalia and any markings beyond the print. The same educator advises against turning religious or symbolic iconography into a costume.

How do you pick a size, and how do you wash it?

Pick the size from the size guide on each product page: chest and height for the adult bodysuit, up to XXL, and age for the kids' jumpsuit, from 3-4 to 10-12 years. The fabric pieces take a cold hand wash and an air dry, and the detail differs by piece:

  • Mens Polynesian Hero Bodysuit Costume: wash the bodysuit and the leaf skirt separately in cool water, then air dry flat away from direct heat or sunlight to protect the padding and print.
  • Boys Polynesian Demi-God Costume: hand wash only, no tumble dry; lay it flat or hang it to dry, and store it flat to protect the padded sections.
  • The long curly black wig: hand wash gently in cool water, air dry, and store it flat or on a wig stand.
  • Fruit headbands: spot clean only, then air dry.

Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks.

Frequently asked questions

What do you wear for a Polynesian demigod costume?

You wear a padded bodysuit with a tattoo-style print, a leaf skirt or belt, and long dark curly hair. Our Mens Polynesian Hero Bodysuit Costume and Boys Polynesian Demi-God Costume each include the bodysuit and the leaf piece; the wig is a separate pick.

Do the costumes come with the leaf skirt?

Yes, both do. The adult bodysuit comes with a leaf skirt with a tie fastening at the back. The kids' jumpsuit comes with a leaf belt that fastens with velcro, with the green leaves attached.

Do you need body paint or a muscle shirt for the look?

No. The tattoo-style print is built into both costumes, and so is the padding: biceps, chest, and abs on the adult bodysuit, and the torso and biceps on the kids' jumpsuit.

What sizes does the kids' costume come in?

The Boys Polynesian Demi-God Costume comes in ages 3-4, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 years. The smallest size is 3-4 years, so check the size guide in the product images before you order.

Does the costume come with a wig?

No, neither costume includes hair. Our long curly black wig is a separate pick, one size, with an elastic band that fits most adults.

How do you wash a Polynesian demigod costume?

Hand wash it in cool water and air dry it. Wash the adult bodysuit and its leaf skirt separately and dry them flat; for the kids' jumpsuit, skip the tumble dryer and lay it flat or hang it to dry. Store either one flat or loosely folded so the padding keeps its shape.
